Like any other self respecting transgender person, I will not in any way support anything a certain TERF-centric author is connected to in the least – even fanfiction connected to their characters.
Any form of association to that author at this point in history after their repeated attacks and actions against the transgender community displays number one, ignorance on transgender and human rights and number two, an inference could then be made to those fanfiction authors possibly supporting said author’s transphobic views. Aside from this are many other problematic classist and racist undertones in the dynamic.
For example “Mudblood” is a derogatory slur and the character of Draco aligns himself with a supremacist ideology for much of the series (perhaps self inspired by the franchise’s author?). Important to also note, the cisnormativity in some fanfics may reinforce stereotypical depictions of gender roles in society by showcasing stereotypical depictions of femininity and masculinity partnered along with a lack of trans representation.
Anything connected to that franchise at this point has been soured for many due to the franchise creator’s hateful views towards transgender people and repeated attempts to demean and dehumanize transgender people from public life. That said, I can not and will not ever get behind any depictions related to the franchise and its characters after all of the hateful rhetoric that has been put out against my beautiful transgender community that deserves to be uplifted and celebrated rather than stigmatized by a wealthy cis-het privileged white woman who seems to be so insecure with their own femininity that they must weaponize it against others under the false guise of “women’s safety”.
The press coverage surrounding anything relating to the original franchise creator and/or franchise itself at this point isn’t entertaining because the general public now knows what type of agenda the creator of the original franchise is looking to push and have propaganda hit pieces published against.
Simply put, it’s no longer cool to support anything connected to that franchise because of all of the hate the franchise’s creator continues to spew out into the world with her substantial earnings rather than invest it into enjoying her own life. In fact, if anything, supporting that franchise now knowing what the franchise creator’s views are on transgender people, why would anyone with a heart be willing to support them and/or their characters? Hate isn’t funny, it isn’t entertaining, it isn’t good for business and it is disturbing. If I was writing these fanfics, I’d consider supporting a non-transphobic led franchise to publicize instead, but that’s just me.
I’d encourage the fanfic writers to really sit and think about who they wish to be professionally associated with and how that person is the only one to benefit from further publicizing this particular franchise.
